Quebec forward Cédric Paré should not be part of the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup for the first game of the regular season against the Montreal Canadiens.

The 25-year-old center was one of the most recent cuts at the Ontario team’s training camp on Friday. Like several teammates, including Alex Nylander, Logan Shaw and Joseph Blandisi, Paré will report to the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League (AHL).

The Lévisien did not obtain any points in two preparatory matches. It was especially his questionable hit against Patrik Laine, of the Montreal Canadiens, that caught the attention. Last Saturday, knee-to-knee contact with the Finn forced the latter to leave the meeting.

Paré quickly became the target of fans angry to see Laine fall in combat before his first official match with the Habs. Odious comments as well as death threats were directed towards the young man. CH players have also condemned the online hatred towards Paré.

The Boston Bruins’ sixth-round pick in the 2017 draft has yet to play a game in the National Hockey League. He set a career high in the AHL last season with 35 points in 61 games with the Colorado Eagles.

The Leafs and the Canadiens will open their regular season Wednesday at the Bell Center.
