On September 10, after a series full of twists and turns, Vincent Labrune was re-elected president of the LFP. Maintained on the throne by the players in French football not without difficulty, the former boss of OM had announced a series of measures. The aim of the maneuver: to calm the critics pointing the finger at the voting system of the presidential election and especially the lifestyle of the LFP. One of Labrune’s key measures was therefore to announce the reduction in his salary.

As a reminder, the latter received €420,000 per year and had granted himself an XXL increase, increasing his emoluments to €1.2 million annually in 2022. This Wednesday, the board of directors of the LFP therefore announced as planned a 30% reduction in the salary of its boss. From now on, Labrune no longer receives €1.2 million, but €840,000 per year. Which is not a gift, however, since the Orléanais retains a salary which is double that which he received at the start.

A sham pay cut?

And this Wednesday evening, two Senators, namely the president (Laurent Lafon) and the rapporteur (Michel Savin) of the Senate information mission on the intervention of investment funds in French football denounced “trompe l’oeil reduction” of Labrune’s salary in a press release relayed by The World.

«The work carried out by the fact-finding mission made it possible to note that the increase in the salary of the president of the LFP from €420,000 to €1.2 million, voted in September 2022, was financed from 2022 to 2024 , not from the budget of the League, but from the envelope (…) of 1.5 billion euros paid by CVC as part of its acquisition of a stake in the commercial company. This salary increase, which was not intended to last beyond 2024 (…) therefore now places, in a lasting manner, an additional burden of €420,000 on the operating costs of the League at the time when it should initiate a savings plan“.
