Old horses who can enjoy their retirement. Out of the box, take a breath of fresh air by discovering the Horse Foundation. It was created in 1958 by Hans Schwarz, a Bernese journalist who wanted to prevent horses, replaced by tractors, from ending up in the butcher’s shop. Since then, equines at the end of their careers can benefit from taignon pastures. The company, unique in Switzerland, has developed over four sites: Le Roselet, Maison-Rouge, Le Jeanbrenin and Les Murs. Around a hundred hectares are available to accommodate around 200 equines and provide the necessary hay. Horses, but also ponies and a few donkeys, which the owners entrust to the Foundation so that they can live a second life. They then discover life in a herd. “In the herd, there are affinities that are created between some and not necessarily with others. They often hang out with friends,” notes Cynthia Rindlisbacher. The manager of the Roselet station points out that the Foundation only accepts mares and geldings aged between 18 and 23 years old. Beyond that, the animals do not adapt well to this new environment.

Funds that must be continually sought

To take care of its animals, the Horse Foundation must seek funds. A horse costs around 1,000 francs per month. It is thanks to donations that this business can operate and employ 35 employees between animal care, administration and the two restaurants. Each owner also pays a pension of 200 francs per month to place their horse. Aline Froidevaux, the public relations manager, further indicates that the Foundation can count on legacies.
