Vitesse Arnhem have received a very heavy sanction from the Dutch Football Association for breaches of licensing requirements. The formation of Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, during the 2019-2020 season, is therefore already condemned to relegation.

And no, it’s not just Branco van den Boomen who is a former TFC player who now plays in the Netherlands… Indeed, there is also Nicolas Isimat-Mirin. The defender, now 32 years old, was loaned by the Besiktas club (D1 Turkey) during the 2019-2020 season, the year in which the Violets went down to Ligue 2.

4 years later, the Frenchman experienced another descent into hell with his club Vitesse Arnhem where Said Hamulic also played at the start of the season (on loan from TFC). Last in the Eredivisie championship (D1 Netherlands), the “yellow and black” suffered a heavy sanction which leaves them in this place of red lantern but with a total now of “-1 point” in the ranking.

They were given an 18-point deduction by the Dutch Football Association “for failing to meet licensing requirements”. Some concerns linked to problems with the club’s takeover had already cost them a sanction of 100,000 euros last February.

“This is the harsh reality”

Through its (interim) general director, Edwin Reijntjes, Vitesse Arnhem assures that it does not want to appeal this decision, knowing that sooner or later, this was bound to happen. “Even though it is a dark day for everyone who cares about Vitesse, it is the harsh reality. After all, such punishment was inevitable,” he said in a statement.

Reijntjes: “In the reaction of the Licentiecommissie is duidelijk te lezen dat er vertrouwen is in de new koers van de club. Daar klampen wij ons aan vast en gaan we volle bak mee door.”

The latter would be satisfied with this sanction alone: “On the other hand – and I really want to make this clear to everyone – we are extremely happy with the opportunity offered to us to keep our license. This too was only down to a wire. […] I have already said it: Vitesse must not and cannot disappear,” he continued.

After 35 years in the elite of Dutch football, the club will battle in the second division next year.
