ASSE played a second consecutive match without the Kops on Sunday January 19 at 3 p.m., against Nantes. The club was sanctioned due to the pyrotechnic devices lit during the match against OM at the beginning of last December. Geoffroy-Guichard's “lungs” will make their return against Rennes on the weekend of February 9, a meeting now scheduled.
The Greens have five successes this season, all obtained at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Eirik Horneland's men won their first match without the support of the two Kops against Reims. The four other Saint-Etienne victories were played in front of more than 30,000 ASSE supporters.
Only the Cup succeeds for ASSE against Rennes in the Cauldron
The matches between ASSE and SRFC in Ligue 1 are not successful for the Stéphanois in their den. The Greens have not beaten Rennes at Geoffroy-Guichard in the championship since October 26, 2012. The Bretons' last two visits to Saint-Étienne ended with clear scores: 0-5 and 0-3. Rennes had inflicted a manita on ASSE during the 2021-2022 season, a match which cost Claude Puel his place on the Saint-Etienne bench. The previous season, the Greens had experienced their first defeat of the season against the Bretons.
The meeting for the 2019-2020 season was canceled due to the Covid crisis. However, the Bretons had traveled to the Chaudron a few weeks earlier in the Coupe de France. ASSE overthrew Rennes in the final moments to qualify for the final. Ryad Boudebouz scored the 2-1 goal in the 94th minute.
During the 2018-2019 season, the match was played in the first period. Wahbi Khazri quickly opened the scoring before the visitors equalized. The match ended with a score of 1-1. Finally, in 2017-2018, Rennes led twice before seeing ASSE come back each time, for a final result of 2-2.
The arrival of Rennes is scheduled
The first leg did not go well for ASSE, and the Greens should be keen to take their revenge to wash away the insult. The meeting between the two teams at Geoffroy-Guichard will take place on Saturday February 8 at 9:05 p.m. DAZN will be responsible for broadcasting this match of the 21st day of Ligue 1.
