In the Emerald Forest kennel in Roura, 779 abandoned or stray dogs and cats were welcomed in 2024. Only 2% of dogs are sterilized and the shelter is overwhelmed. Faced with the flow, the Department of Food, Agriculture and Forestry granted a subsidy to facilitate the vaccination and sterilization of unowned animals. Every week, around fifteen stray or abandoned dogs and cats are welcomed by Evelyne Devaux, director of the Emerald Forest kennel.

It happens very often, especially after the holiday season when firecrackers make the dogs run away, and the owners cannot find them.

Since January 1, the kennel has benefited from an envelope of 50,000 euros to finance vaccination against rabies and sterilization of dogs and cats without owners. A helping hand, which can ease the adoption process.

The objectives of this grant: to promote vaccination to fight against diseases, and sterilization, in the face of the flow of dogs and cats in need of shelter.

In this shelter, 60% of abandoned animals are euthanized due to lack of adoption and lack of resources. Financing sterilization is one of the ways to reduce this dizzying figure and save more animals.
