“The whole week’s work paid off”

“The whole week’s work paid off”

We spoke yesterday (Friday) with the coach. He told me that he was trying to trigger something in terms of confidence, and it was done. Last week in , I had a complicated match where I didn't touch many balls. I know how to evaluate my matches so I expected to be a substitute. I try to respond on the ground. The work all week has paid off – I scored quite a few goals in training – and talking with the coach was good. I hope that this will kick off my season in the championship and that I will maintain this efficiency.

Can you tell us about your second goal, this shot into the top corner?

It’s an instinctive goal! I enter the box, I see Andy (Carroll) next to me so I know there is no one in the middle. So the idea comes to me to make the hook, hit and see what happens. It passes between the defender's legs and ends up in the top corner. (on his celebration for the double) I felt my hand slip a little, so I slowed down, I shouldn't hurt myself on that (laughs). Plus it was at the foot of the Ultramarines, we were able to celebrate it with them.

How do you explain your delicate start to the season?

Physically, I wasn't ready. I still am not, by the way. I hadn't played since February. I missed the sequence of matches. The team is new, we didn't necessarily have the benchmarks. I have a different position, usually I play nine, here I am a little lower, I have more races to do. Afterwards, it's work. It's happening little by little.

So it's not just Andy Carroll who scores goals for the Girondins…

Of course. We have a lot of offensive weapons. Everyone must find confidence and take their chances when they can. It was important to continue our series, we had to win and show that we have the team to go to the top of the table. Playing the leading roles required a result this Saturday evening.
