Former PSG player, Zoumana Camara finished his career there before immediately moving on to a role as assistant to Laurent Blanc, in office at that time. The central defender, who has 1 selection for the French team, opted for this path after a proposal from the club. Nine years later, he still works at PSG, this time as U19 coach since 2021.
Passed by theABOUT and theASSE, Zoumana Camara found refuge in PSG from 2007, a club he only left at the end of last season. In 2015, at the age of 36, he finally decided to take the position of assistant even though he wanted to continue playing. He recently spoke about the proposal made by the leaders of the PSG and the welcome received from Laurent Blanc.
Qatar made a proposal
Zoumana Camara could have discovered a new destination by joining another club to finish his career. But he explains that he was made an offer that was difficult to refuse. “We never have the options we want on the table and we choose. It's up to you, depending on what you really want, to choose the path. I didn’t reach a point where I said to myself: “I want to be on the staff”. I wanted to continue playing. But I realized that it wouldn't have been at PSG. The club only offered me an assistant role. So I weighed the pros and cons. The doubt was to ask myself how the players would perceive me” he explains in The Club of 5 on YouTube.
Camara satisfied with the welcome given by Laurent Blanc
Assistant coach of Laurent Blanc and his successors, Zoumana Camara appreciated the behavior of the former French coach. “The coach in place at that time, Laurent Blanc, wanted it. Blanc called me into the office, he said take a look and you'll find out where you feel best. He gave me total freedom, that was good of him” he continues.
