“A return to France? Only OM could bring me back to Ligue 1.” This is one of the confessions distilled by Florian Thauvin in his one-on-one interview with Zack Nani. The 31-year-old winger swears loyalty and love to the club he has frequented the most in his career, in two episodes and two very distinct contractual periods.
Well before that, it was at SC Bastia that the adventure began for him, at the time for a salary estimated at close to 6,000 euros gross per month. He will earn seven and a half times more by joining LOSC in 2013, but the adventure will turn out very short, since after the first six months on loan to Bastia, he will decide to backtrack, believing that the initial sporting project was not no longer the same and will immediately join Olympique de Marseille.
At OM then at Tigres, the biggest contracts of his career
On this occasion, he tripled his emoluments and doubled them again later, when he decided to live his first foreign experience on the other side of the Channel. Back in 2016, first on loan, then permanently at Olympique de Marseille, he completed his contract at the end of which he would not lack requests. To everyone’s surprise, he decided to do like another former Marseille player before him, by going into exile in Mexico, with the Monterrey Tigers, for a salary that was substantially similar.
The experience will last two years, but sportingly it will not be conclusive. Florian Thauvin then decides to return to Europe, drastically cutting back on his pretensions (to 195,000 euros gross per month), to relaunch himself on green ground. His first months are complicated but he regains sensations and much better performances this 2024-2025 season. Living up to the elegant player he was at the prime of his career, in the OM jersey and serving the French team.
