Beatrice Vio, known as “Bebe” Vio, had her legs and forearms amputated as a teenager after suffering from meningitis. The 27-year-old Italian fencer, who is entering the Paralympic competition this Wednesday, September 4, is one of the great figures in disabled sport.

“Bebe” Vio holds a very special place within the paralympismAt the Grand Palais, she should literally shine, as her unique history and sporting exploits can arouse the public’s enthusiasm.

The one who is much more than a fencer fell in love with her sport at the age of five. Six years later, she was diagnosed with fulminating meningitis. To save her life, her legs and forearms had to be amputated to prevent creeping necrosis. The fulminating infection turned the life of a carefree, energetic and talented child upside down.

Only 4% of people with this strain of meningitis survive. Vio is hospitalized for three and a half months, undergoing multiple surgeries and spending a year relearning to walk with the help of prosthetics. Death does not want young “Bebe” Vio, she chooses to bite life to the fullest.

Author, actress, television host, activist for the disabled and promoter of disabled sports, “Bebe” Vio is back in 2021 in Tokyo. With her mask on her face, the athlete appears possessed once her four prosthetics are removed, her foil attached to her amputated left arm and her body harnessed in a chair.
