El Mordjene – “It’s really killer”, “I think Nutella has been dethroned!”, “To die for! Incredible”: they drive for hours to find this Algerian spread that threatens to dethrone Nutella

While the new Nutella spread is making waves in stores, it is far from being the only one creating a buzz this summer. For several months now, the Algerian spread “El Mordjene” has been making the rounds on social networks. Previously unknown on French shelves, the product has been so successful that it is announced to be out of stock in almost all specialty grocery stores. Some have sold up to 5,000 jars in the space of three months… a real record!

Faced with this craze, the Cebon company, which produces the famous El Mordjene spread, has announced that it is increasing its production. Enough to delight new fans of this little treat, whose recipe is nevertheless very simple.

Made in Oran, Algeria, since 2021, El Mordjene spread is much healthier than others. The one whose taste is compared to that of Kinder Bueno is made up of hazelnuts (60%), cocoa and milk powder. It obviously contains sugar and vegetable fat, so be careful, consumption is still done in moderation.

Better than Nutella? Yes, according to some Internet users. El Mordjene spread was voted “Algerian consumers’ favorite product” in 2022, 2023 and 2024… and may well become the French’s favorite product this year as well. Since June, buyers have been willing to drive for hours to find a jar of the famous holy grail. A rush that is pushing some store managers to only release their stocks sparingly, and to only allow two jars per customer.

Since the beginning of summer, on TikTok, test videos have been coming one after another. Influencers and Internet users are tasting, comparing, tasting again and giving their opinions on the famous El Mordjene spread. “Mmm, this is so good. It’s delicious, it really tastes like Kinder Bueno.”says NinaNaturelle on TikTok. And under the videos, everyone also adds their comments. “It’s really a killer”one says. “It’s very very good, better than Nutella”assures another. “I think Nutella has been dethroned!”

And because Internet users are very greedy, some have also tested the brand’s other spreads. The classic, “super good”who has “the real taste of a luxury spread” according to TikToker JohanPapz. Then the one with hazelnut pieces, for a crunchy side. “To die for! Unbelievable.” The hardest part now is finding them on French soil.

For now, the Algerian spread is mainly sold in specialty grocery stores. It can also be found in some clearance stores, such as “Val Destock” in Argenteuil. But despite its dazzling success, the brand wants to “stay discreet” et “don’t seek success” according to Le Parisien. So while she assures that she is increasing her production, it is not certain, however, that she will find her pots in supermarkets in the coming months.

In terms of price, what does it look like? While in Algeria you can find a 700 gram jar for 950 Algerian dinars (6.50 euros), in France, you will have to pay 8.50 euros on average to buy it. A bit more expensive than a jar of Nutella, displayed at 6.59€ per kilo in some stores.
