We were expecting a depressing repeat of 2020: a face-off between two white men, almost octogenarians. Change of atmosphere: after an eventful summer across the Atlantic, between a failed debate, an assassination attempt and a change of candidate on the Democratic “ticket”, the American political season is ultimately shaping up to be exciting and uncertain, with November 5 in sight.

If the casting has changed, the United States is once again facing a crucial choice for the future of its country and its democracy. Will it reopen the doors of the White House to a vengeful Donald Trump with increasingly assumed authoritarian tendencies, and who has never acknowledged his defeat in 2020? Or, eight years after Hillary Clinton’s defeat, will Americans elect Vice President Kamala Harris, who would become the first female president in the history of the United States?

In addition to the presidential election, American voters will also have to vote for the federal Congress – whose control will be decisive or paralyzing for the next tenant of the White House – but also for their local legislature, sometimes their governor, as well as in dozens of referendums. Our correspondents in the United States, our special envoys and our journalists mobilized in Paris will follow closely the campaign of each party, will give the floor to Americans and will travel the seven key states of this campaign, where the race for the White House will be decided, from Arizona to North Carolina via Pennsylvania.

To help you follow this rich news and shed light on the sometimes abstruse functioning of American institutions, in addition to its traditional coverage, Release launches a weekly newsletter and a campaign journal, which you can follow on our site. Several articles to help you better understand the functioning and specificities of this election are also waiting for you on a dedicated page. We will also select, each week, the best publications of the Washington Post on this election.
