Former Republican Party number three Liz Cheney announces her support for Kamala Harris

Liz Cheney, the most prominent member of the anti-Trump Republicans, said on Wednesday, September 4, that she would vote for Democrat Kamala Harris in the US presidential election on November 5. During her speech at an event at Duke University in North Carolina, she mentioned the « danger » that Donald Trump still represents for the country, according to her. The “Grand Old Party” (GOP) remains united behind its candidate.

A former representative from Wyoming, a very conservative state, to the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, Liz Cheney became, during her term, a fierce critic of Donald Trump, after having supported him in the 2016 presidential election against Hillary Clinton, whom she then described as “criminal”She served as vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, pro-Trump assault on the Capitol, and voted to impeach the former president in February 2021. Following that impeachment, Liz Cheney was ousted from the 2022 Republican primary in Wyoming, preventing her re-election to the House of Representatives.

“I don’t think we have the luxury of writing candidates’ names on the ballot, especially in key states.”Liz Cheney said Wednesday, referring to the practice of allowing voters to handwrite the name of someone other than the officially registered candidate on their ballot. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I’ve thought deeply about this. Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only will I not vote for [lui]but I will vote for Kamala Harris.”

Trump critic, and former fierce critic of the Democratic camp

The daughter of Dick Cheney, who was vice president of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under George W. Bush, Liz Cheney, 58, today joins other Republicans who have announced their support for Kamala Harris, such as former representatives Adam Kinzinger and Denver Riggleman.

More than 200 former Bush administration officials and former staffers for the Republican presidential campaigns of Senators John McCain – a candidate in 2008 – and Mitt Romney – in 2012 – also announced their support for Kamala Harris last week in an open letter. James McCain, John McCain’s son, also said he had joined the Democratic Party and would vote for the Democratic candidate – a valuable endorsement for the latter in the key state of Arizona.

Liz Cheney, a lawyer and former assistant secretary of state for the Middle East, was the leader of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives at the time of the January 6, 2021, attack, making her the “number three” in the GOP. She subsequently broke with most of her colleagues over, she said, Donald Trump’s responsibility for the assault. She then lost her leadership position and was one of the few Republicans who sought a seat on the January 6 Committee, appointed by the Democrats who then controlled the House.
