The Ukrainian authorities have long listed the companies, and their leaders, which, according to them, support the Russian invasion, in particular by ensuring the growth of the country which they perceive as a way of financing terrorism.

Mondelez is the 27th company to make the list. The CEO of the group, the Belgian Dirk Van De Put, is also personally targeted. The leader explained last week to Tijd that the decision to remain active or not in Russia had been “by far the hardest” of his career. “The financial losses would have been enormous”, he justified. And beyond the financial aspect, it would have been “a human tragedy”. “90% of what we sell in Russia is also produced there. We employ 3,000 people in the country, and we source raw materials from 10,000 farmers.”

The Ukrainian blacklist caused controversy at the beginning of the week, because the Hungarian bank OTP was included in it and in reaction, Budapest was the only one of 27 Member States of the European Union to refuse a new tranche of aid from the European facility to Ukraine, de facto blocking the reimbursement of arms supplied by the EU to Ukraine. According to the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, the Member States concerned have already presented a bill of 10 billion euros since the start of the Russian invasion.
