Google publishes the first beta version of its next system: Android 16. It includes major changes for tablets as well as a new feature borrowed from the iPhone.
It was expected and here it is only a few hours after the presentation of Samsung’s Galaxy S25: beta 1 of Android 16, the next major version of Android planned before summer.
No more Developer Previews, we are now attacking the versions of Android 16 incorporating changes for both developers and users.
What’s new
Better manage tablets and folding devices
The biggest change in Android 16 Beta 1 is the improvement in the adaptation of applications to different screen formats. The goal is to allow developers to create applications capable of better adapting to the use of smartphones, tablets and foldable screens.
Above all, users will be able to resize windows to their liking and not only according to the characteristics of the screen. Obviously, mobile games are not affected.
A function adopted from Apple
The new Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ is here
Xiaomi’s future bestseller has just arrived. This new reference combining impressive features and attractive prices is already on sale at Boulanger.
The other big new feature of this Beta 1 is Live Updates. Behind this name hides the same system used by Apple for several years on iOS, as well as the new Now Bar function of One UI 7 at Samsung.
It allows applications to display a real-time notification on the lock screen. Practical for following the progress of a match, the delivery of a meal order or the arrival of a VTC race.
AVP support
Android 16 adds support for the Advanced Professional Video (AVP) codec with a bitrate of up to 2 Gb/s and the APV422-10 profile (YUV 422 on 10 bits).
This is a codec developed by Samsung to enable new uses for video professionals.

Android 16 Beta 1 lays the foundation for improvements in Gemini’s integration with Android. Google takes the example of the new products produced in partnership with Samsung on the Galaxy S25.
Developers can expect to gain new tools to help integrate Gemini into their applications.
Compatible smartphones
Google is not adding new smartphones compatible with Android 16 at the moment. You therefore need a smartphone from the Pixel range.
- Google Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro ;
- Google Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro ;
- Google Pixel Fold et Google Pixel Tablet ;
- Google Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro ;
- Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL et Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
We imagine that Google could open the beta to other smartphones with future updates.
