Yemen: twenty Ethiopian migrants die drowned | APAnews

Twenty Ethiopian migrants lost their lives in a shipwreck off the southern coast of Yemen after their boat, which left Djibouti, capsized. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday.

The tragedy, which occurred last Saturday, cost the lives of nine women and 11 men, the press release specifies.

“The boat was carrying 35 Ethiopian migrants as well as the Yemeni captain and assistant, who had departed from Djibouti,” the IOM said.

According to the Organization, the shipwreck occurred off the coast of Taiz governorate, in southwest Yemen, due to strong seasonal winds.

Since 2014, the Eastern Route has been the scene of 3,435 deaths and disappearances, including 1,416 drownings.
