Body of soldier Oron Shaul recovered in Gaza after almost ten years

The Israeli army revealed this Sunday that the body of soldier Oron Shaul, held in Gaza since 2014, had been recovered. An official statement detailed that this recovery was carried out during a “special operation” carried out in Gaza.

Oron Shaul was killed in the Shujaiya neighborhood during the Israeli offensive called “Protective Edge” on July 20, 2014. Since that date, his remains have been held in Gaza. This military offensive resulted in the deaths of around 2,200 Palestinians.

According to the Israeli military, there have been sustained efforts for nearly a decade to recover Shaul’s body, having intensified during the current war in Gaza. Note that Hamas has not yet reacted to the assertions made by Israel.

Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel has claimed to have caused the deaths of nearly 47,000 people in Gaza. In addition, a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is scheduled for Sunday, January 19 at 8:30 a.m. local time, or 06:30 GMT. This ceasefire was negotiated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States.

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, former Minister of Defense, for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces genocide charges at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the enclave.

This information was reported by our colleagues from Anadolu, emphasizing the importance of the international judicial aspect of this persistent conflict.
