The International Development Committee of the British Parliament on Friday urged the government to recognize a Palestinian state, specifying the conditions to be met and a timetable for actions to be carried out.

In a report devoted to the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, developments in the West Bank and displaced Palestinians, the committee considered that “the government must define the steps to follow to recognize the State of Palestine, including the necessary conditions to its completion and a timetable of planned actions”.

The report found that Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, caused heavy civilian casualties and the destruction of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure.

Referring to the decisions of international courts on the risks of violations of international law in Gaza, the report states: “We consider that there is a plausible risk that the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has involved serious violations of international humanitarian law, giving rise to thus accusations of genocide. »

The report reaffirmed the need to recognize the Palestinian state as an essential step towards establishing lasting and stable peace in the region.

He also noted that around 500 aid trucks were needed each day to meet Gaza’s humanitarian needs, but that figure had dropped to an average of just 25 trucks.

Separately, worrying allegations have been raised regarding the use of drones targeting civilians following Israeli airstrikes.

The report found that between October 7, 2023 and October 31, 2024, Israel demolished 1,800 Palestinian structures and killed 736 Palestinians during this period.

It also mentions that 1,722 Palestinians were displaced due to land seizures carried out by Israel during this period.

The committee called on the UK government to take all necessary steps to “ensure that Israel is held accountable for any ongoing violations of international humanitarian law”.
