The Nigerien authorities have announced new measures on the conditions of entry and stay of foreigners in the national territory.
“Brigadier General Abdourahmane Tiani, president of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), head of state, signed, today January 13, 2025, an order relating to the entry and stay of foreigners in Niger”, indicated a press release from the presidency broadcast Monday evening on public television.
“Under the terms of this order, the entry or stay of a foreigner in Niger is conditional on the possession of travel or residence titles and documents,” continued the same source.
“Any violator of the provisions of this order may be subject to administrative measures of expulsion, refoulement, administrative detention, repatriation or deportation to the border,” warned the press release, specifying that criminal sanctions are also envisaged.
These range from two to five years of imprisonment and a fine of five million (10,000 USD) to 50 million CFA francs (100,000 USD) against any foreigner expelled from Niger who refuses to leave or who decides to ‘come back to it.
The same penalties will be applicable to Nigerien citizens who welcome or accommodate foreigners in such a situation.
According to the press release from the Nigerien presidency, “all these administrative and/or legal measures are inspired by the need to ensure reinforced protection of our country against attempts at infiltration and destabilization to which it could be subject. in this context of insecurity.
In an interview given to national television on December 25, President Abdourahmane Tiani indicated that Niger was facing several threats of destabilization, particularly from France which has military bases in certain neighboring countries such as Nigeria. and Benin.
The governments of these two countries have issued statements to deny any French military presence on their territory.
