The LR boss of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, confirmed the purchase of new seats costing several tens of thousands of euros for the presidency of the chamber, in an interview published by the Parisian Saturday January 11 evening. This week, the Chained duck revealed that the Senate had ordered a new seat for the presidency for 40,000 euros excluding tax. Failing to find the appropriate piece in the National Furniture directory, an acquisition procedure was launched in June, with delivery expected in the spring.
Questioned on this subject, Gérard Larcher corrected the price of the armchair, “Exactly 34,000 euros for two armchairs and a prototype”while specifying that the furniture of the Senate “has a history and therefore a cost”.
The one who has led the upper house for more than ten years, however, claimed not to be informed of this purchase. He also considered that it was a “error”, “we should have been more demanding on the price”. Consequently, Gérard Larcher assured that he had “requested an investigation”while saying wait “of the Senate administration a change in practices”.
“We cannot advocate reducing public spending and not apply it to ourselves”underlined the President of the Senate, who, in the same interview with Parisian says he expects the new Bayrou government to continue “reducing the deficit and public spending with concrete actions”.
