Attacking drug trafficking through the wallet: the mayor of Montpellier explains how he would like to see the legislation evolve.
“I want the law to change!” Michaël Delafosse, who had invited the press to take stock of current events at the start of the year, did not shy away from questions about the latest shootings against a backdrop of drug trafficking. A thirty-year-old died in the Mosson district on Thursday January 2, another was injured. Their car was targeted by a shooter who was riding a scooter. While the individual is still being sought by the police, new shots rang out this Sunday 5th at dawn in Malbosc. A man was injured, hit by one of the bullets fired from a car.
Take action on money laundering
The mayor of Montpellier specified the legislative developments which, according to him, would make it possible to strengthen the action of local elected officials. “We must first act on the origin of criminal assets. In Italy, it is the litigants who must prove where the money comes from. Not the opposite. Then, the mayor must have control over the business facilities It is not by chance that we bought the old Quick de la Comédie. […]” For him, there is urgency: “The explosion in drug consumption over the last ten years threatens the cohesion of society. There must be a general mobilization of society. Otherwise we will end up with contracts on the heads of judges, investigative journalists and elected officials who disturb them.”
Nitrous oxide: a prevention campaign
In addition to increasing the number of municipal police, the metropolitan transport police and the residential peace brigade, Michaël Delafosse indicated his intention to act in the field of prevention. An awareness campaign to prevent the harm caused by nitrous oxide is planned following the municipal ban on public spaces. Community service increased from 100 hours to 5,000 under my mandate,” he further clarified. “The expulsion of people from social housing falls within the framework of the Zero Impunity system”.
Asked about the effectiveness of the Clean Place system that the new Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, wants to make “more lasting than spectacular”the mayor of Montpellier responds: “I'll take it! Clean place, it's not the alpha and omega. But in Montasinos, when the residents see the police, they are happy.” While demanding a firmer legal response, the elected official invites the deputies “to work on a consensus law. How does the Republic accept being challenged again in this way?”.
In terms of security, the mayor also commented on the arrest Sunday evening of an influencer for “incitement to hatred and call for murder”. He had made a report to the public prosecutor under article 40 after being alerted to the content of a video calling for acts of torture. He welcomed the responsiveness of the prosecution. “Everyone takes their part.”
