How to prevent users from leaving Bing for Google? By making them believe that they are already on Google, of course!
Bing has the reputation of being the search engine that you use with Edge only once on your new PC, to download the Chrome browser or to access Google. Microsoft uses many tricks to try to retain users on its own services, and the Windows publisher has this time outdone itself with a new trick aimed at deceiving our vigilance.
As spotted by Windows Latestif you use Bing without being connected to a Microsoft account and you type “Google” in the search bar, the results page that appears strangely resembles… the Google interface. It is clear that Microsoft is imitating Google’s design to make users believe that they are already on Google and therefore do not need to change search engines.
When Bing imitates Google’s interface
The tabs, the characteristic doodle, the search bar located under the famous drawing, but above a small text… Bing displays a carbon copy of Google, as you can see with our screenshot below .
This interface only appears in the situation described earlier. For any search other than “Google”, the usual Bing results page is displayed. Likewise, if the user is logged in to a Microsoft account and types “Google” in the Bing search bar, it is the classic design that is offered to them, and not the Google imitation.
To add to the trickery, when you search for “Google” without being connected to a Microsoft account, Bing automatically scrolls down the page with the equivalent of flicking a scroll wheel. For what ? In order to hide the Microsoft Bing banner which could betray the attempt to disguise itself as Google, in order to display only the doodle and the search bar. Clever, certainly, but we cannot say that this ruse does credit to Microsoft.
