Father John Misty is in a joyful mood this December 2012, during a promotional event around the Coachella festival in Los Angeles. So he tries his version of I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly, and the party turns grandiose: possessed, he undulates more than is reasonable, improvises words and profanities, falls on his knees in front of a stranger while offering her a kiss on the hand. A stage beast soaked in the sources of charisma every second of his life?
Any photo, any concert extract will validate the first impression. And it’s not from yesterday, according to the primary school memory that he revealed a few years ago: “On my birthday, after school, three girls from my class came in front of my house to sing in chorus . A moving, wonderful gift, but my mother had cast them out like witches.”
