For the Swiss ski lifts, it’s “an excellent start to the season”. By communicating its first figures for winter this Friday, the association claims an increase in attendance of 18% compared to the month of December 2023, already considered very satisfactory. The snow conditions particularly benefited the resorts of the Vaud and Friborg Alps. Switzerland Tourism estimates that overnight stays in the mountains have increased by around 3% in the country compared to the same period last year.
For several days, Anzère, Grimentz-Zinal and Nax have been reporting record figures for the end-of-year holidays. In Villars-Gryon-Les Diablerets, director Martin Deburaux counts 115,000 skiers between December 26 and January 2. Author of 16 international studies on snow and mountain tourism over the last 20 years, specialist consultant Laurent Vanat puts into perspective both these sensational announcements and the pessimistic speeches about the future. He insists: “Skiing is not dead.”
