REPORTAGE – For Syrian artists playing this music, particularly controlled under the regime of Bashar al-Assad, this New Year has a taste of freedom.

Swept by the red and green jets of light, his eyes closed as if to better concentrate on the notes that make the hundreds of revelers standing in front of him sway, Maher Green has been mixing tirelessly for two hours. In his right hand, a bottle of champagne emptied after the stroke of midnight bears witness to the transition to the year 2025.

On December 31, the techno DJ played with the artist Boshoco in a bar in the Bab Touma district, in the heart of the old Christian city of Damascus. Between two transitions with oriental notes, the two artists indulge in a fraternal embrace. “ I can tell you that it's a special New Year, we can finally celebrate it independently », smiles Maher Green behind his decks.
