The world of sport and skiing mourns the tragic passing of Sophie Hedigera 26-year-old Swiss snowboarder, victim of an avalanche on the slopes of Arosa, Switzerland. The accident occurred on Monday 23 December while Sophie was practicing freeriding, her great passion. The Swiss authorities have already started an official investigation to clarify the dynamics of the accident and verify any responsibility.
The condolences of the Swiss Ski Federation
The news profoundly shook the sports community. Walter Reusser, CEO of Swiss-Ski, expressed the Federation's pain:
“We are shocked and our thoughts are with Sophie's family. For the Swiss-Ski family, his tragic death casts a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays. We will remember Sophie fondly.”
In an official statement, Swiss-Ski underlined how Sophie disappeared “too soon and brutally” while carrying out her beloved hobby, freeriding, on the same slopes where she had found a second home. The Federation, in agreement with the family, has decided not to release further statements out of respect for the mourning. (continues after photos)
A promising career and extraordinary talent
Sophie Hediger was considered one of snowboarding's rising stars. In the 2023/24 season he achieved his first two World Cup podiums, including a second place in St-Moritz last January, during the dress rehearsal for the 2025 World Championships.
The 26-year-old had represented Switzerland at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, competing in the women's snowboard cross and mixed team competition.
Sophie's loss leaves an unfillable void in the sport and among those who knew her. The world of skiing and snowboarding rallies around the Hediger family, remembering a young athlete who still had so much to give, both on and off the slopes.
