As the end of support for Windows 10 approaches (October 2025), Microsoft is stepping up its efforts to encourage users to adopt Windows 11. In a recent blog post, the company highlighted the gaming features of its latest system. exploitation, such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage. The idea is to present them as major arguments to improve the player experience.
Windows 11, exclusive gaming features?
Windows 11 offers several tools intended to enrich PC gaming. For example, we find Auto HDR which improves visuals by adapting SDR games to HDR, DirectStorage which reduces loading times with the use of an NVMe SSD or even the Game Bar. These features, combined with an impressive game library, position the OS as a gaming platform of choice. However, you must have the appropriate hardware (HDR screens, NVMe SSD).
Gamers were quicker than the majority of users to adopt Windows 11, but the transition remains slow. According to Steam figures (November 2024), Windows 11’s market share climbs to 52.48% surpassing that of Windows 10 for the first time. The handover took place in mid-2024. However, Statcounter indicates that Windows 10 still retains an overall market share of 61.82%, compared to 34.94% for Windows 11. These statistics are more “global” and do not only concern the video game segment.
Microsoft hopes that the end of support for Windows 10 will push more users to Windows 11. However, many current PCs do not meet the minimum requirements including the requirement to have TPM 2.0, which limits migration. Although it is possible to bypass these restrictions, non-compliant systems will not receive official support.
It is possible that the end of Windows 10 will encourage millions of users to upgrade their PCs or buy new ones, however it is not excluded that a significant portion could continue to use this unsupported OS, at least temporarily for a little while longer.
