“The ceremony which brings us together today in this beautiful town of Koumassiprecisely in Grand Campement is the launch of the communication campaign on two subjects of great importance. First it concerns Mpox disease. It is known as smallpox of singe and which is experiencing a current epidemic crisis. And finally communicate on hygiene which is a challenge to take up every day”, indicated at the outset the deputy chief of staff of the Minister Pierre Dimba of Health, just after the welcome address of the 6th deputy mayor of the commune of KoumassiMabéa Jean-Claude.

This is, continues Dr Soro, a caravan which will deploy from Koumassi and agree on all the communes of the Abidjan district over a period of 35 daysto raise awareness among the population about good practices hygiene, in order to fight against diseases like Mpox.

“Since July 2024, the world has been facing the Mpox epidemic declared by the WHO as a public health emergency of international concern. The first case in Côte d’Ivoire was reported in July and to date , the country has declared 104 cases including one case of death”, noted the deputy chief of staff of the Ministry of Health, pained to note that the only case of death is a son of the city which is hosting the launch ceremony of this campaign nationale.

“And this only case of death is unfortunately one of your sons Koumassi large encampment”, he lamented to the customary authorities of the Cité Houphoët-Boigny of Koumassi large camp.

The question of hygiene arises acutely, in particular the evacuation of wastewater, which must be resolved quickly, believes Dr. Soro.

“For us, it’s about raising awareness among the population about good hygienic methods to combat infectious diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever and vector-borne diseases including malaria and dungeon. This campaign which brings us together this morning aims to make you aware of the respect of hygiene measures, in particular, hygiene on oneself, hygiene at home, at the market and around you, in order to avoid diseases. You must wash your hands regularly with soap and water. It is indeed necessary to avoid dumping water into gutters designed to evacuate rainwater.

Avoid running wastewater into the street to eliminate from our environment what it can contain water and encourage the development of mosquitoes, vectors of malaria and madness,” he advised.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic in July 2024, Côte d’Ivoire has recorded 104 cases including one death from Koumassi large camp in the commune of Koumassi who hosted the launch ceremony.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about hygiene which calls for washing your hands regularly, especially before meals. During 35 days campaign, populations will be made aware of the mode of transmission and prevention measures.

“Dear people of the Abidjan district, we are counting on you for this campaign to promote good practices hygiene”, concluded the representative of Minister Pierre Dimba, thus marking the official opening of the campaign nationale of awareness to MPOX or smallpox of singe and to good practices hygiene made possible thanks to the support of partners, notably Unicef, whose constant support he paid to the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene.
