La Gantoise had a fairly mixed first part of the season. Sports director Arnar Vidarsson knows his team must do better.
La Gantoise is currently 5th in the Pro League with 27 points in 18 matches. The Buffalos have had their ups and downs since the start of the season. Just before taking off for Northern Ireland to challenge the Larne team in the Conference League, the sporting director of La Gantoise Arnar Vidarsson spoke with The Latest News.
“Getting into the top 8 (of the Conference League) would be an unexpected success,” he began. “Especially since we are on an unpredictable trajectory as a team. Everything is new, from the players to the staff through the board of directors.”
The people of Ghent have already played a significant number of matches this season, even though we are only in December. “This will already be our 32nd match,” recalled Vidarsson. “We have to rotate (…) and we also have little time to fine-tune the team in training. So, if at the end of the month we are in the round of 16 of the Conference League and in the six first in the Pro League we will even be slightly ahead of our program.”
The Icelandic leader therefore knows that his team can still improve. “We must not be afraid to say that it is not yet brilliant. The core is not yet ready. We have changed system and coach.”
“We can’t do magic either. We are giving ourselves 18 months in total, that is to say three transfer windows, to get the core ready. After next summer, the squad will have to be there and we will no longer be able to say that we are in the process of building”
