According to the initial plans for the resurrection of Lancia launched in 2021 by the management of the newly formed Stellantis group, Lancia was only to launch 100% electric models from the year 2026. Like Ds Automobiles and Alfa Romeo, it then aimed to to abandon thermal engines completely before the end of the current decade.
But while the European automobile market is moving less quickly than expected towards electric models, Lancia must review its plans in this area just like almost all other brands. In an official press release announcing the place of manufacture of its future high-end Gamma (the Italian factory in Melfi in Italy) whose production is due to start in 2026, the brand already specifies that the future cousin of the DS N°8 will have right to a hybrid version in addition to its 100% electric version:
“The decision to equip the new model with electric and hybrid powertrains is a direct response to the current market dynamics and will allow the vehicle to meet any type of mobility need, which will lead to a probable growth in production and, consequently , an increase in the competitiveness of the brand on the global market”it is specified.
Like Alfa Romeo and probably DS
The Stellantis group’s other “premium” brands, which were also banking on a move to 100% electric before the end of the decade, should opt for the same strategic turnaround. During the presentation of the new DS N°8, those responsible for the brand hinted at the subsequent arrival of plug-in hybrid versions and the same should be true for the replacement for the current DS 7. As for Alfa Romeo, this definitive switch to electric has also been postponed.
