Starting in early 2025, the municipality of Milan, Italy’s second largest city, will ban outdoor smoking in the city.

According to reports in the local press, the Municipality of Milan has decided, as part of climate and air planning, to extend the smoking ban, which was first introduced in 2021 in places such as stadiums, parks, cemeteries and bus stops.

From January 1, 2025, the Municipality of Milan will ban smoking in public places.

According to the new regulations, the consumption of cigarettes and tobacco products will only be allowed in certain special areas, provided that there is a distance of at least 10 meters from other people.

Violators of this rule will be subject to a fine of between 40 and 240 euros.

According to the parameter “PM10 concentration” used in air quality measurements, the press notably announced that cigarette consumption was responsible for 7% of air pollution in Milan, the industrial and financial center of the country.

The move is part of the program to halve carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

Some tobacco manufacturers and retailers plan to challenge the new ban in the regional court, arguing that the municipality does not have the authority to make such a decision.

A similar move was implemented in April in Turin, another industrial city in northern Italy. The municipality of Turin has banned smoking in open spaces within five meters of other people.
