“He’s such an insufferable asshole.” He will not stay in power for long,” the multi-billionaire wrote on Wednesday, reacting to a statement the day before by Justin Trudeau on the decline in women’s rights.
In a speech given Tuesday evening to members of the Equal Voice Foundation, Mr. Trudeau affirmed that women’s rights are being undermined in several countries, mentioning in passing the defeat of Democrat Kamala Harris in the presidential election in the United States. -United States won by Donald Trump on November 5.
“It shouldn’t be like this. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. We were supposed to be on a steady, if sometimes difficult, march towards progress,” said Mr. Trudeau, adding that he is a proud feminist and will always be an ally.
“And yet, just a few weeks ago, the United States voted a second time not to elect its first female president. Everywhere, women’s rights and progress are under attack. Openly and subtly,” he also said.
Obviously, these comments aroused the ire of Elon Musk at the very moment when President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to impose tariffs of 25% on Canadian and Mexican products on the first day of his return to power, on Jan. 20, if Canada and Mexico don’t stop what he calls the flow of drugs and immigrants across their borders.
Elon Musk’s virulent outing was published as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prepared to meet his provincial counterparts to discuss the measures Ottawa intends to take to secure the Canada-US border.
Earlier in the day, Quebec Premier François Legault affirmed that it is “urgent” that the federal government present its plan to strengthen security at the Canadian-American border in order to avoid the imposition of tariffs that could be devastating for the Canadian economy.
“I will repeat to him that it is urgent that he table a plan to secure the borders, to avoid having tariffs,” argued the Quebec Prime Minister upon his arrival at the meeting of the Council of Ministers.
“This plan must be quantified: how much money it puts in, how many people it adds. It’s urgent if we don’t want to have tariffs,” he argued.
Mr. Legault also recalled that he had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Trump last weekend, on the sidelines of the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. In light of this meeting, which lasted around ten minutes, he said he was “more convinced than ever” of the urgency of submitting a plan regarding the border.
In Ottawa, the Minister of Supply and Liberal political lieutenant for Quebec, Jean-Yves Duclos, maintained that “the plan is ready” and that Mr. Trudeau will present it to the premiers of the provinces and territories during the Wednesday meeting.
However, he did not confirm that this plan will be costed, as requested by Mr. Legault.
Wednesday’s meeting between Mr. Trudeau and his counterparts will be the second since Mr. Trump won the November presidential election in our southern neighbors, and the first since Mr. Trudeau and some members of his team were invited had dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, with Mr. Trump almost two weeks ago.
Since this event, the words of Mr. Trump – who allegedly suggested that Canada become the 51e State of the United States – causes a lot of reaction.
The president-elect added another layer on Tuesday, when he referred to Mr. Trudeau as being the governor of the “great state of Canada” in a publication on his social network Truth.
