The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution Tuesday evening regarding the establishment of a “peace conference” on the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that will work to promote the establishment of a Palestinian state. 157 countries supported the decision, seven abstained and only eight opposed it – including Israel, the United States, Hungary and Argentina.
The assembly called on all UN member states to continue sending economic aid to the Palestinian Authority. Additionally, Israel was asked to end its presence in Judea and Samaria as quickly as possible. As part of Israel’s request, Jerusalem was asked to evacuate all Israeli citizens “from the occupied Palestinian territory.”
A few hours before this vote, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia had declared their intention to chair the said conference which will be held next June. The head of state also declared that France would recognize a Palestinian state at the appropriate time and that it wished to include new additional partners in this initiative.
