Not only did the Alouettes confirm the new three-year contract awarded to quarterback Davis Alexander on Wednesday, but general manager Danny Maciocia clearly indicated that he was making him his right-hand man.

“We are now entrusting him with the reins of the team and we have full confidence in him,” commented Maciocia, in the press release sent by the organization.

“At only 26 years old, Davis is the future of this franchise,” the CEO also indicated. This season he was called upon to play crucial matches with us and he responded very well with Olympian calm. “He’s been learning with Cody Fajardo for two years and he’s ready to take it to the next level.”

The news related to Alexander’s agreement was first reported late Tuesday evening by the specialized site 3DownNation, following information obtained by reporter Justin Dunk.

“I love it here,” Alexander also confided on November 11, during the season review of the Alouettes players. I like the coaches and the organization.”

Alexander will be able to comment further on Thursday during a press conference planned by the Alouettes.

Uncertain future for Fajardo

Now that the Alouettes have confidence in Alexander, it is the future of veteran quarterback Cody Fajardo that seems uncertain to say the least in Montreal.

Fajardo’s contract is still valid for one year, but talks are reportedly underway in hopes of modifying certain conditions in his agreement, which would obviously include a salary reduction.

“You can’t have two quarterbacks who receive a starting quarterback salary,” Maciocia had already repeated several times, during the season review of the Alouettes’ leaders, two weeks ago.

The Alouettes’ choice

According to what the site 3DownNation reported, Alexander would receive a signing bonus of $120,000 to remain with the Alouettes. The young 26-year-old quarterback would have a base salary of $258,000 for the 2025 season. Depending on his performance, Alexander could obtain an amount above $400,000 for the following two campaigns.

“Maybe I will stay without being the starter, but I’m not sure,” Alexander also noted during the player assessment. I’m not ruling out any possibility.”

The Alouettes will ultimately have chosen to make him their new number one quarterback. No offense to Fajardo.
