The Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonkoannounced Tuesday, during an interministerial council in Dakar, that the price of a kilogram of peanuts is set at 305 CFA francs for the 2024-2025 marketing year. This increase in 25 CFA francs compared to the previous campaign (set at 280 CFA francs) marks increased support for producers.
A decision beyond recommendations
The National Interprofessional Peanut Committee (CNIA)which represents the producers, had proposed a price of 290 CFA francs. However, the government has made the decision to go further to meet the expectations of producers while balancing the interests of cryers.
Ousmane Sonko also expressed the ambition to bring this prize to 500 CFA francs per kilogram in the years to come, based on a calculation model that better reflects current economic realities.
Key Metrics for a Successful Campaign
The start of the campaign is planned for December 5with a series of measures aimed at guaranteeing its success:
- Priority to local collection : The seeds must first be collected by operators and oil growers before any export authorization.
- Strengthening borders : Increased surveillance will be put in place to prevent the escape of peanut seeds to neighboring countries.
- Rehabilitation of collection points : Key infrastructure will be identified and renovated as a matter of urgency.
- Collection point equipment : 750 screening devices will be financed and distributed to ensure optimal operation of operations.
Overall support for agricultural sectors
In addition to peanuts, other agricultural crops will benefit from support:
- THE rice farmers of the valley will receive support for flood recession crops ahead of the off-season campaign.
- The crop protection will be strengthened thanks to additional material resources for the fight against seed-eating birds and better seed security.
- The export of seeds with seed value will be prohibited to prioritize local needs.
In collaboration with the Agricultural Bank and the National Development Bankthe government will mobilize 5 billion additional CFA francs to finance the marketing campaign, including that of cashew nuts.
