“I would like to pay for an order online but my card does not work…”, a new scam is circulating on Messenger. The perpetrators of this scam pretend to be someone close to you and try to make you believe that they are having a problem making an online payment.
Promotions linked to Black Friday are multiplying, while Christmas is on the horizon. In this context, the number of purchases made online is simply exploding. And unsurprisingly, some malicious people intend to take advantage of this favorable period for purchases to achieve their ends.
The new scam circulating on Messenger is as simple as it is pernicious. It all starts with a message from one of your loved ones. This message states: “ I would like to pay for an order online but my card doesn’t work, it’s through bancontact, you can pay for the order if I send you the link and I’ll refund you ».
Just below this message, an insert offers two payment options: “Open your Bancontact app” or “Pay with your Bancontact card”.
Of course, this is an outright scam. The account that originated the message was actually hacked. So you are not in contact with one of your loved ones, but with a scammer. Regarding the insert which offers two payment options, it does not come from a bank in any way. This is actually a link that redirects the victim to a fraudulent site programmed to record your banking details. We are therefore dealing with a phishing attempt.
So yes, this scam can be funny if the message mentioned above comes from someone you barely know. Who would pay for an online order for a simple acquaintance? However, this scam is much more dangerous if you receive a message of this type appearing to come from a family member or close friend.
In any case, ignore this type of message. If you have any doubts, contact the person who sent you an online payment request directly by telephone.
