  • The refusal of the motorway extension project is Federal Councilor Albert Rösti’s first failure at the polls.

  • Conversely, this result confirms the comeback of ecologist Lisa Mazzone.

  • The two heavyweights of Swiss politics have not finished crossing swords. Their next duel could take place on February 9 already.

The vote on the highways was of rare intensity. It could be summed up in a duel between two political beasts of this country, the Genevan Lisa Mazzone and the Bernese Albert Rösti, as their personal commitment marked a campaign which saw their trajectories cross. Sunday evening, the federal councilor, considered one of the strong men of the government, was defeated, he who had never lost at the polls. On the contrary, the victory of the opponents confirmed the return to the forefront of the ecologist, a year after his mortifying non-election to the Council of States and the initial doubts surrounding his party presidency outside the Federal Chambers.

Green national councilor Raphaël Mahaim is convinced, from now on, “Lisa Mazzone, with the party behind her, is establishing herself as the figure of opposition to a Federal Council which is leading the most right-wing policy in recent history”. Le Vaudois notes that this return goes back further than just the campaign period. “She is a hard worker, she was fully committed from her candidacy for the presidency of the party, which was not necessarily easy after the disillusionment of the federal government. This demonstrates great strength of character,” he emphasizes, admiringly.
