A failed bet for the President of the Republic, whose Renaissance party came in third position after the first round of the early legislative elections.

As the results of the first round of the legislative elections that he himself called were announced, Emmanuel Macron launched an appeal to the French people. A logical reaction after the large victory of the National Rally this Sunday, June 30, far ahead of the presidential camp.
The French president thus called for a “large, clearly Democratic and Republican gathering for the second round” against the RN of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella in the second round. For the head of state, “the priority is to avoid the imminent danger of an absolute majority of the RN”notes a relative for AFP. “All republican forces must work together. »
At the end of this first round, the far right is credited with 34% of the votes, ahead of the New Popular Front (29%) and Emmanuel Macron’s camp (21.5%), according to estimates at 8 p.m. from the Ifop institute for TF1 and LCI.
A snub for the majority
Emmanuel Macron then took advantage of the particularly high participation during this first election to recognize a desire to “clarify the political situation”in a short written statement. The high turnout in the first round (…) demonstrates the importance of this vote for all our compatriots (…) Their democratic choice obliges us”, he added.
Participation could reach nearly 67% for this first round, according to Ifop for TF1 and LCI. A figure never seen before in the 21st century, much higher than in 2022, when 47.5% of voters turned out.
Despite a very significant participation, this is a major snub for Renaissance and the tenant of the Élysée. Reason why, on the left as on the far right, the result of the first round was another opportunity to underline the defeat of the presidential camp.
This is’“a heavy and indisputable defeat” for Emmanuel Macron, welcomed the rebellious leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Marine Le Pen believes that “the macronist bloc” East “practically erased” after the result of this Sunday evening.
