“This COP29 was a real waste”she “ends in failure”denounces Sunday, November 24 on franceinfo Marine Pouget, head of international governance at the Climate Action Network, after the adoption of an agreement on climate finance in Azerbaijan deemed disappointing by many participating countries. After tough negotiations, developed countries have committed to financing developing countries threatened by climate change, to the tune of $300 billion per year by 2035.
Marine Pouget considers this funding insignificant compared to the needs she considers “around 1 000 billion”. She sees a “sniffing at developing countries”. “They wanted to hear that we were going to support them in their ecological transition, help them protect themselves from climate change and they got almost no positive response”she says.
The head of international governance of the Climate Action Network assures that this financial commitment still raises many questions, “lots of uncertainty”. “We don’t know if it will only be subsidies from developed countries to developing countries or if there will also be private investments,” she explains. She thus regrets the absence of “clear, firm and rapid commitment”.
“Developing countries need money in the next three to four years to be able to rectify their ecological transition.”

Marine Pouget also believes that this COP29 did not send “strong signal” on the subject of “reduction of greenhouse gas emissions”. “COP29 should remind us that we agreed last year in particular on the exit from fossil fuels, and therefore a drastic reduction in the years to come”more “this message has been garbled”she emphasizes. For the head of international governance of the Climate Action Network, this COP therefore “failed all his objectives”. She is now calling the States “to reflect on” on “how next year’s COP in Brazil will be able to rectify the situation”.
