Legislative elections 2024dossier

For the historian and professor at the Collège de France, the hasty convening of legislative elections by the head of state has generated an escalation of fears which risks benefiting the RN.

The “me or chaos” posture of the Head of State and his rhetoric against “the extremes” during the very short electoral campaign led to “perversely invert the notion of a republican front”, estimates Pierre Rosanvallon, historian, sociologist and honorary professor at the Collège de France. On the eve of the first round of historic legislative elections, the intellectual, who contributed to defining in his work the current of the “second left”, politically embodied by Michel Rocard, sees in the dissolution of the National Assembly decided suddenly by Emmanuel Macron, and his circle of close advisors, the ultimate translation of “his faith in his exceptionality”.

For the author of numerous works on the social question, democracy and political ideas, including the trials of life. Understanding the French differently (Seuil, 2021), a majority of National Rally deputies at the end of the second round, on July 7, would constitute “a historic break” on the scale of the history of the Republic.

Rarely have legislative elections been so uncertain and high risk
