New standoff between the government of Michel Barnier and local authorities, this time the departments. Members of the group from the right, center and independent departments threatened to no longer pay RSA from January 1 if the government does not review its text of the 2025 budget.

The Rhône department is one of these communities which threatens to stop the payment of this social allowance which it is responsible for distributing locally via the CAFs. This is the department of “new” Rhône, outside Lyon Metropolis which recovered this consequence on its territory.

“Suspend their payments” of RSA to family allowance funds

In the region, many departments are affected in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (Ain, Allier, Ardèche, Drôme, Cantal, Isère, Loire, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie), depending on the group of departments of the right, the center and the independents.

“From January 1, all departments of the right and center will suspend their payments” of RSA to family allowance funds and “we will no longer take care of new unaccompanied minors because it is migration policy” , announced Thursday Nicolas Lacroix (LR), president of Haute-Marne.

“Will we have to impact the elderly person and make them pay more than they have to pay in nursing homes? Should we reduce the number of social workers? Should we support sports clubs less? Should we protect children less? Should the price of school canteens be increased for middle school students? », added the President of Gironde about the budgetary efforts requested by the State from the departmental councils as part of the 2025 budget.

More than 5,300 beneficiaries in the Rhône

The Rhône departmental council pays the RSA each month to more than 5,300 beneficiaries in the department, outside the metropolis of Lyon. For comparison, in the metropolis, led by the ecologist Bruno Bernard who does not threaten recipients with suspension, there are 40,000 residents who receive this aid (7% of the population of Greater Lyon).

Last June, the Rhône Department already attacked the State over the RSA. The community led by Christophe Guilloteau had voted on a motion against the revaluation of 4.6% of the RSA which the government defined by decree on April 1.
