The decision was eagerly awaited, but the Immunity Commission of the National Council decided… not to decide. This Monday, its nine members had to decide on the lifting of the immunity of two of their UDC colleagues, the Zougois Thomas Aeschi and the Valais Michael Graber. This was requested by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (MPC), after the two parliamentarians came to blows with federal police officers on June 12, during the visit of the President of the Ukrainian Parliament Ruslan Stefantchouk.
Following these clashes, the MPC asked the commission on September 19 if it was authorized to carry out criminal proceedings for preventing the two elected officials from carrying out an official act. He will have to wait. The commission’s decision has therefore been suspended and additional information will be requested from the administrative delegation of parliament. “Composed of the presidents and vice-presidents of the two Chambers, it was she who had requested a strengthening of security during this visit, a majority of the commission therefore wanted to have its opinion before deciding,” notes the Fribourgeois Pierre-André Page, president of the Immunity Commission. The UDC national advisor refuses to procrastinate. He would have preferred a frank decision. “This postponement will only prolong the period of uncertainty for our two colleagues,” regrets Pierre-André Page.
