On the occasion of COP29 in Baku, Africa is facing a major turning point in its energy transition. With more than 600 million people without access to electricity and a billion without a clean kitchen, the continent nevertheless has considerable assets.
Indeed, Africa is full of essential minerals to the global energy transition, as well as immense renewable resources, notably solar and wind. However, it continues to export these resources at low prices, without reaping the economic benefits that they could offer it.
Mohamed Adow, director of Power Shift Africa, highlights this reality: « 600 million Africans are deprived of electricity and a billion do not have their own kitchen. However, this continent is incredibly well equipped with renewable energies. But we export our minerals at low prices and import finished products, which increases inflation in Africa. To fight climate change, we must also economically transform the continent. »
Africa holds unique potential to become a key player of the global energy transition. With his strategic minerals and abundant energy resources, it could not only meet its internal needs but also contribute to global decarbonization. But for this, the unity of the continent and better management of its resources are essential. « The African continent must unite and seize its strategic advantage »added Mohamed Adow, calling for a takeover of resources for sustainable development and a major role in the energy transition.
Africa is one strategic crossroads : it has the means to transform its challenges into opportunities. However, this requires strengthened cooperation and international support, particularly in terms of climate finance and of valorization of local resources. Africa has everything to gain by becoming a leader in green energy production and actively contributing to the fight against climate change.
