A 25-year-old compliance officer has died in tragic circumstances at the port of Banjul, Gambia. According to police, he fell to his death after waking up in a container.
A tragedy occurred on the night of November 15 to 16 at the new port terminal in Banjul, Gambia. According to information provided by the Gambian police early Sunday evening, Essa Colley, 25, employed as a compliance officer at Global Tracking and Maritime Solutions (GTMS), died after falling into the sea.
According to the preliminary investigation, the events took place between midnight and 12:30 a.m. The victim, who woke up in an empty container at the edge of the platform, apparently fell while trying to urinate. Despite the screams heard by witnesses, the strong waves prevented any rescue attempt. The victim’s personal effects, including his helmet, shoes and notepad, were found on site.
The body of the young man was recovered around 6 p.m. the same day and formally identified by his brother Salifu Colley. The remains were transported to Edward Francis Small University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Gambia Police have offered their condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
