Floods in Spain: Barcelona airport is underwater

After the catastrophic floods that occurred in Valencia and its region, heavy rains hit Catalonia this Monday, and more particularly Barcelona. The city has been placed on red alert and its airport is partly flooded. Numerous images published on social networks show certain areas of El Prat airport in an unfortunate situation: water leaking in abundance from the ceilings, flooded parking lots, passengers floundering in the terminals.

According to the El Prat website, several flights were delayed and around fifteen flights were diverted, reports Ultima Hora. A crisis committee has been set up at the airport. In the greater Barcelona area, commuter train traffic has also been suspended. According to the Spanish meteorological agency (Aemet), the situation of “meteorological crisis” in the Valencia region is over.

It is now the turn of Barcelona and its surroundings to submit to the law of Mother Nature. “A very intense downpour left 81 l/m² at El Prat airport. In Baix Llobregat, more than 180 l/m² can accumulate in 24 hours. Be very careful! Do not travel if it is not strictly necessary!”, warned Aemet. Residents of Barcelona also received an alert from civil protection on their cell phones.
