Work to deflate small dams in the Tangier-Assilah prefecture began last week in the Boukhalef area, west of the strait’s capital.
They initially concerned the Boukhalef 1 dam and will subsequently extend to Boukhalef 2 and Boukhalef 3. Two other dams, namely Sghir and Saboun, are also affected by this mud evacuation work.
The objective of this operation is to restore small dams in the region, neglected for decades, and increase their storage capacity with the start of the rainy season.
The operation was initiated by a group of partners within the framework of an agreement concluded under the supervision of the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency, and the Ministry of Equipment and Water, represented by the management of water supply. The initiative has an estimated budget of 6 million dirhams.
Hamid Benifi, head of the agency, explained, in a statement for Le360that by restoring the storage capacity of these dams, this operation will allow them to fully play their role in protecting against flooding, and also in watering green spaces.
