This Sunday, Saint-Pauls Killarney achieved a valuable victory in the championship. Newly arrived, Mathile Aïcha Diop and her teammates dominated Galway Mystics (85-65) in the Women’s Superleague Basketball.
St Pauls secured their second win of the season with an easy victory against the Galway Mystics. The show probably won’t be classified in the classic category, as they struggled to find a very high pace in the first part, probably not helped by a three-week break from action. However, once they felt the Westerners’ breath on their necks in the third quarter, they capitulated to win.
The big favorite of the match was St Pauls, but their premature lack of activity combined with an energetic performance from Galway brought only two points to the match, 51-49, midway through the third quarter. As is often the case, the underdogs can be encouraged in a match like this, but a time-out called by coach James Fleming also rectified the visitors’ problem and the resulting improvement allowed them to return home. Rookie Mathilde Diop made her competitive debut in the game and had a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds.
