Science and innovation: Omar Hilale will co-chair the ECOSOC 2025 Forum

Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, has been appointed co-chair of the ECOSOC Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation. This UN mission, which he will share with the Ambassador of Finland, Elina Kalkku, underlines the international recognition of Morocco’s active role in technological innovation. The Forum will be held on May 7 and 8, 2025.

This appointment highlights the strategic vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has placed digital transformation and artificial intelligence at the heart of national priorities. Morocco has established itself as a key player in Africa thanks to its advances in the field of digital infrastructure and its commitment to the integration of technology in education and sustainable development.

As co-chair, Omar Hilale will be responsible for leading discussions on ways to mobilize science and innovation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These exchanges will culminate in the presentation of the results at the ECOSOC High-Level Political Forum in July 2025.

This designation follows on from Moroccan initiatives within the United Nations, notably the co-facilitation by Mr. Hilale of the first UN resolution on artificial intelligence adopted last March, and the creation of the Group of Friends of the UN on AI, bringing together more than 60 countries.

The 10th edition of the ECOSOC Forum is of particular importance for the implementation of the Global Digital Compact, adopted last September. As co-chair, Omar Hilale will play a central role in formulating concrete solutions to integrate technology and innovation for sustainable development on a global scale.
