The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, spoke on Tuesday about an incident which took place in a French diplomatic compound in Jerusalem. These statements were made during an interview with France 24 and RFI.
Barrot called the incident “extremely serious” and insisted France would not accept its repetition. Two French gendarmes were arrested by Israeli police while they opposed the armed presence of Israeli police on the French Eléona site in Jerusalem, which constitutes a violation of international law.
Israel’s ambassador to France, Joshua Zarak, was summoned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss possible consequences of the incident.
Jean-Noël Barrot also condemned the policies supported by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, particularly those concerning colonization in the West Bank. France has already applied sanctions against certain extremist settlers, sanctions which could be extended to a European level.
Regarding Donald Trump, Barrot warned of the potential negative repercussions of increased tariffs on the European Union, the United States’ main trading partner.
As for the Ukrainian situation, Barrot criticized the idea that the Trump administration would abandon Ukraine, highlighting the serious consequences this could have beyond Europe.
