This Monday, June 10 in the morning, Emmanuel Macron has the appearance of conquerors, those to whom nothing can resist. The President of the Republic, with a dazzling smile, climbs at a running pace, without a jacket, into the Élysée Super Puma which is to take him to Tulle, the martyr city of the Liberation. The crushing defeat suffered by his camp in the European elections the day before, in the face of a triumphant far right, already seems far away. All eyes are now on the anticipated legislative elections. A lightning campaign has been preparing since the head of state declared the dissolution of the National Assembly on Sunday evening.

Seeming not to fear offering, through this stratagem, a victory to the National Rally (RN), Emmanuel Macron found on board the helicopter his memory advisor, Bruno Roger-Petit, known as “BRP”. The sixty-year-old orchestrated the memorial tour in the town of Corrèze where, eighty years earlier, 99 men were hanged on the orders of the 2e Das Reich armored division, three days after the Allied landings in Normandy.

But this morning, the two men talk neither about history nor the past, but about the looming battle. The former journalist, specialist in Florentine intrigues of the Mitterrand years, is one of the architects of this dissolution which disconcerted adversaries as much as allies. Emmanuel Macron, author of Revolution (XO Editions, 2016), sees it as a return to the sources, a rediscovered audacity: “the spirit of macronism is going to the French people by trusting them”he pours out in front of his advisor.

Major maneuvers

The thunderclap paused the story of the end of the reign. And even if the National Rally (RN) has a chance of winning a majority of deputy seats, the Elysée prefers to design a France, going against European trends, capable of uniting behind the presidential majority against the extremes. The big maneuvers have begun at the presidential palace. The head of state must speak in the coming days to detail the program which will be defended at the polls. He will be ” clear “ and, according to the Elysée, “surprises” are still possible. Afterwards, “come whoever wants”, launches a close friend of the head of state, calling on all republican forces on the left or right to join the presidential camp. The President of the Republic will hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Scalded by the compromises made to the Republicans (LR) for the vote on the “immigration” bill, in December 2023, Emmanuel Macron no longer hears “to compromise”, said an Elysian advisor. There is no question that the President of the Republic will embark on “combination” – small arrangements – like the oppositions do, squeaks a close friend of the head of state. Afterwards ? “Nothing is written”tirelessly repeats Bruno Roger-Petit who, advancing towards a small group of journalists from Tulle, says, with a playful air, it follows its course… of history”.
